BB to Canvas Tutorials

START TO FINISH DEMONSTRATION (1 hour 4 minutes)

  1. Download BB package (0:05)
  2. Import BB package (1:00)
  3. Make the Home page (4:00)
  4. Change order and visibility of links on White Navigation Pane: (6:45) Home, Announcements, Syllabus, Modules, Discussions, Assignments, Quizzes, Grades. Make the rest invisible. 
  5. Make the Home page linked as the Home page (9:45)
  6. Orientation Table, link to your own files (11:25). Make sure to link the Student Cafe to your OWN version. If you don't change the link, you will be in my course's forum. Also, link your syllabus to the Orientation table as well as the SYLLABUS link on the white navigation pane. Then click on the black border of the Orientation table so that the contents become highlighted. The click on the table icon on the toolbar above the table. Click on Table Properties, and change width to 90%, and click save. That way, the table will expand and shrink to fit the person's screen size without the right side disappearing.
  7. Import these pages from Commons IF you don't see them in your files on the right side. Link them to the Homepage Orientation table: (20:00)

  8. Import an image for homepage, and for About Your Professor (25:20)
  9. About Your Professor page (27:30); ask me for the code to that page if you want to use it as a template. Make it the same way you made the Homepage, then customize it. You will need to import your profile photo to that page. I have Safiah’s profile photo if you need it.
  10. Start Here module: remove all items under that category, then insert Homepage and syllabus quiz (34:40)
  11. Edit the syllabus quiz if you want to customize it for your class. (35:50)
  12. Go to Modules, rename each category to Module 1, 2, 3, etc, instead of weeks or units. (37:00)
  13. Change Unit or Week items into Modules (40:30)
  14. Reorder items within modules and publish each (43:27)
  15. Clean up the Assignment link (43:48)
  16. Put in the weighting of grades (46:38). Do this by clicking the Assignments link on the white navigation pane, and then click next to the gear icon at the top right.
  17. Embed your checklists into a Page, in addition to linking your checklists for download. (52:30). NOTE: Make sure the name of each checklist file does NOT have a comma, or it will prevent your checklist from automatically updating when you change it on Google docs. To see it changed on Canvas, exit that page and open it again, and you should then see the new version.
  18. Make Spring syllabus (55:30)
  19. Set availability and due dates on each item (55:30). If the month on the little calendar is blocked from view, scroll the page down lower and try again so the calendar pops upward instead of downward.

  21. Lock the modules, add a pre-requisite or requirement if desired. (57:10)
  22. Check for Accessibility compliance (60:00): Nothing should say "click here", no URLs should show, image names should have ALT text, PPTs and Word docs should be checked for accessibility, no colors that have a meaning, videos are all closed captioned

Step 1: How to get your Canvas Sandbox  (5 mins)

Correction: On a quiz, when you edit a question (e.g. removing the extra blank answer choices), be sure to click on UPDATE QUESTION at the bottom of EACH question before you click the SAVE button at the bottom of the whole quiz.

1)     Click here for how to embed your checklists into a Page, in addition to linking your checklists for download. HINT: go to module 1, click on plus sign, add CONTENT PAGE, then NEW PAGE, then put the name (Module 1 checklist), then click add item. Before doing anything else, go to Module 2, click on the plus sign and repeat. It will be ready to go this time, with the name as the previous one, so now just change the number in the name from 1 to 2. Repeat for all the other modules before doing anything else. Then you can go back to Module 1 checklist and add the printable version link, then embed it. Do not embed it first and then add the printable version link. 

1)     Click here for how to make weighted grades: Go to the Assignments link on the white navigation pane, and to enter Weighted totals, click on gear at the very top, next to the blue +Assignment. Then make sure your categories are the same as your syllabus, assign % to each category. Then make sure the right assignments are in each category.
